Client

Our client is a national online automotive retailer, whose portal provides consumers with the ability for vehicle researching, online financing, and vehicle purchasing. As one of the surviving pioneers of the direct online car buying model, the client has become the natural choice for consumers who demand objectivity, selection and upfront pricing, and for dealers who want to leverage the Internet for cost-effective incremental sales and revenue.

Issues

The website was suffering serious scalability issues as a result of which the decision was made to move to a J2EE technology platform. The client requested Aaxis services to validate that the new architecture would support the desired levels of stability and scalability and to assist in implementing the required software development processes. Additionally Aaxis was engaged to develop new functionality relating to a dealer fulfillment sub-system.

Approach
  • Reviewed all software designs and component implementations.
  • Developed test environments to benchmark with custom scripts: Windows verses Unix Solaris
  • Tested the performance of new production infrastructure.
  • Fine tuned WebLogic application servers, Oracle database and Solaris systems.
  • Assisted in the production rollout of new J2EE site.
  • Worked with business analysts and technologists to derive architecture supporting the dealer referral model.
  • Worked with external service providers to detail external interface specifications.
  • Built the technical framework to support the new business model "Dealer Fulfillment" utilizing the new J2EE platform including WebLogic and implementing the required external interfaces with over 3,000 systems.
Results
  • The company's web infrastructure was migrated from Microsoft to Sun Solaris platform achieving high availability and scalability, with room for growth.
  • The performance of the system in terms of concurrent users was improved with a factor 10.
  • New J2EE site out-performed prior Windows DNA implementation.
  • Established a flexible design which enabled client to build used car channel on dealer referral system.
  • System's dealer referral program was deployed in 15 states, adding $10 million to company's annual revenue within six month.
